Stop Trouble Before It Starts

They knew. These Columbine High School students had been receiving threats from two strange boys. They heard strange sounds coming from their garage. If the students had shared this information, their lives would be very different today. If only they'd talk, the authorities could have intervened and their friends might still be alive. Students and parents are often in position to see and hear signs of potential violence.

"Since 1997 there have been numerous shootings in U.S. schools. The vast majority of perpetrators verbalized their threat bebullyfore the incident. If we can capture that information before an event occurs and work with law enforcement, we hope that we could prevent future incidents," states William F. Downey, retired special agent for the FBI.

The threat to our children has grown stronger over the last few years. In the real presence of guns, drugs and knives, can we honestly expect our students to learn effectively.
